Survey of Rose Stem Girdler in Oregon and Southwest Washington Berry Fields

Responding to reports of unexpected rose stem girdler damage in regional caneberry fields

In 2018, raspberry and blackberry growers and researchers reported unexpected economic damage associated with rose stem girdler (Agrilus cuprescens).

In response, we conducted a field survey funded by the Oregon Raspberry and Blackberry Commission to investigate the incidence and economic impact of rose stem girdler in Willamette Valley blackberry and raspberry fields.

The project also created a pathway for information gathered in the field to reach growers. Findings were shared through weekly pest alerts in the commission-sponsored Small Fruit Update and were condensed into fact sheets and management recommendations for growers.

The survey connected field investigation with grower communication, helping move information about an emerging production concern back to the industry as it was being observed.
