Field insight grounded in what’s happening now

Every field is different. There is no cookie-cutter approach to monitoring fields across our region.

That’s why our approach combines specialized field monitoring with regional knowledge to help growers understand what’s happening on-farm and determine what action may be appropriate.

From pest and beneficial insect monitoring to export market programs and research support, our field technicians collect and interpret information in the context of the specific field, environmental conditions and real-time regional trends.

Monitoring with context

Monitoring tells us what is present. Context helps determine what it means.

Our field technicians work directly in commercial fields across the Pacific Northwest, gathering data that can help growers make informed management decisions.

Rather than approaching every field with the same assumptions, we consider what we’re seeing alongside factors such as field location, historical field knowledge, crop conditions and environmental conditions.

Depending on the service and field findings, our guidance may address treatment necessity, cultural practices, habitat management or export requirements. In some cases, findings may require further investigation.

Field Services

Our services vary depending on the crop, program and need.

IPM Monitoring

Regular field monitoring helps identify pest presence, pressure and changes over time.

For programs such as Spotted Wing Drosophila monitoring, field data can help determine whether intervention may be needed and identify cultural practices that could reduce pressure, such as adjusting harvest frequency, managing host plants around field borders or opening the plant canopy.

Beneficial Insect Monitoring

Monitoring beneficial insect activity can provide a broader view of what’s happening within a field ecosystem.

Findings may help identify where habitat restoration efforts could be focused, where additional investigation may be useful, how monitoring could be improved or whether management practices appear to correspond with changes in beneficial populations.

This monitoring also assists clients with data collection to stay in Certification compliance on farms for specific programs (i.e. Bee Better Certification).

Export Program Support

Export programs can carry specific field and crop requirements.

We conduct field monitoring and provide growers with information about applicable program requirements based on what is observed in the field, helping support the documentation and field-level processes required for participation.

We assist growers and packers in compliance with the Oregon Blueberry Korea Export Program, as well as export programs to China, Philippines, and Vietnam.

Field-Specific Agronomic Support

Management information is a holistic conversation that accounts for the specific field location, environmental conditions and observed pressure rather than relying solely on a maximum-risk-avoidance approach.

We also assist with observing and identifying crop deficiencies and diseases. When necessary, we can assist fields to collect soil and tissue samples to confirm pests, diseases, nutrients, or viruses.

The individual field discussions may include chemical or cultural management options or a determination that intervention is not currently necessary.

Research & Field Project Support

Our field team works alongside researchers, commodity groups, industry organizations, and directly with farms on applied research and regional projects requiring on-farm monitoring, data collection and field support.

From individual fields to regional insight

Field observations become more useful when they aren’t viewed in isolation.

Because our technicians are working across multiple farms and locations, we can observe regional patterns as they develop while still interpreting findings at the individual-field level.

That wider view can provide useful context around changing pest pressure, environmental conditions and other trends growers may be seeing across the region.

This means individual field decisions can be informed by both what is happening on site and what is happening around it.

Supporting research in the field

Applied research depends on reliable field execution.

We work alongside researchers and industry organizations on projects requiring on-farm monitoring, observations and data collection.

That can mean supporting an existing research protocol, helping carry out field activities across participating farms or contributing practical field knowledge as a project develops.

This work also creates another connection between research and the people it is intended to serve—bringing researchers closer to field conditions while giving growers opportunities to participate in work addressing regional needs.
