Background: Endangered species considerations were not directly included in the original pesticide active ingredients approval process. After many years of lawsuits between the U.S Environmental Protection Agency and groups who did not see progress in registered active ingredient endangered species risk assessments the negotiations have boiled down to integrating endangered species regulations into mainstream pesticide use. In order to comply with pesticide labels, a bulletin must be saved/printed out for applications happening in a six month timespan. These additional label laws will go into effect for all active ingredients to prevent the ingredient from being removed from registration altogether.
Fast Facts:
- There is a court ordered deadline for implementing these regulations.
- These regulations relate to 1,700 endangered species. The vast majority of those are plants. These plants are mostly endangered in Hawaii. There are also animals and insects included on this list.
- These regulations are here to stay but the understanding of the regulations is being determined and interpreted at this time.
- These additional runoff and pesticide interception regulations are related to very specific geographical locations. Those locations are called “Pesticide Use Limitation Areas” or PULAs.
- Even if your fields are outside a PULA you still must prove it by saving/printing all the Bulletins Live Two files as proof.
- These requirements are in effect for the 2024 season and beyond.
- These bulletins are ready for printing now but more active ingredients are being loaded into the site over time.
Tips for using the Bulletins Live Two website:
- Enter the specific information requested of the categories found on the left side of the webpage.
- Zoom into the specific field location(s) you are referring to so the “Printable Bulletin” button found on the top right of the map turns from red to green allowing you to see what, if any, pesticide use limitation area exists and to print/save the bulletin for reference.
- Print/save files now for applications likely to happen less than six months from now.
- If you have adjacent fields you can print/save the bulletin for multiple fields on one map as long as the “Printable Bulletin” button is green.
- Bulletins from prior application dates cannot be printed/saved after the application date, only before.
